The Escapist, an online magazine, has decided to focus on pay-to-play online games this week, and Christina González has written a piece about the development of Neopets financial income, from banner ads, to premium, to the recently added NC Mall. The complete history is here, from Adam to Viacom. It’s quite an interesting peice, and includes some quotes from Neopets/Viacom executive Ms. Kyra Reppen about their plans to bring in even more money from Neopets in the coming months. Neopets is a division of Viacom’s Nickelodeon Kids and Family section.

Tn 2004, things changed. Powell and Williams launched a premium subscription service, which granted players several bonuses, along with a sponsored downloadable toolbar. At the same time, they introduced banner ads.

In case you were unaware, Neopets is owned by Viacom, specifically the Nickelodeon Kids and Family division. Apparently this brand is being driven through even more now.
